With our growing team membership and the large number of high schools involved in our mentoring programme, AURA held a Quiz Night Fundraiser to assist in purchasing new materials, allowing us to continue with our workshops and volunteer work.
Over 50 participants turned up to the University of Auckland Engineering building on a cold and rainy evening, forming teams and combining brainpower to tackle a range of questions. From naming the five main characters on The Big Bang Theory to identifying the inventor of the flushing toilet, each team’s intellectual prowess was put to the test!
A wide range of baked goods and drinks kept everyone fuelled for the evening, particularly for the various games played in-between rounds. Along with exercising their gambling instinct in a game of ‘Heads and Tails’, participants put their many years of folding paper planes in class to use. With great prizes up for grabs, everyone’s competitive nature came through.
Along with the individual prizes for games, raffle draw and door prize, there were team prizes for the ‘Smartie Pants’ (1st prize), ‘Deepest Pockets’ (most answers bought) and the ‘Wooden Spoon’ award (last place). The evening became a strategic exercise, with teams choosing bonus rounds in which to double their points, as well as frantic bribes for answers during the final round to maximise their points. The overall winners of the quiz night were the Software Engineering team, who happened to also have the deepest pockets…
