Introduction to Java

Java was one of the three robots we built for the Robot World Cup. It follows high school rules for Gateway 2011 and is fully legal.

Main Features:
Drive Train: 6-motor drive (2×393 1×269 on each side), 5:3 gear ratio
Lift: Slanted 4-bar (1×269 each side), 1:7 gear ratio but turns through a smaller angle than a normal 1:7 to reach 30″
Intake: Tank Tread (1×269 each side)

10 motors were used. Java reached up to 30″, and included a pneumatic descorer. Intake was designed so that it could expand to pick up objects in any orientation. Java played as an interaction robot, and was able to win the 30″ center goal 9 times out of 10 during autonomous, as well as score in goal 1/3 (the 11.5″ goal depending on which side).

Java played in the Robot World Cup as part of the AURA/AURA2 alliance that finished third overall. Here are two videos demonstrating some of its capabilities:

Here are some videos of some of the matches that Java played in (it’s usually the one at the back because it’s playing interaction):
